CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Academic achievement is the outcome of education, the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their educational goals. Academic achievement has also been described as the scholastic standard of student at a given moment. This scholastic standard could be explained in term of the grades obtained in a course or group of courses. Achievement is a measure to output and the main output in education are expressed in term of learning that is change in knowledge, skills and attitudes of individual as a result of their experiences within the school system. It is also regarded as the level of attainment of a person in an examination that is, how an individual is able to demonstrate his/her abilities. Students achievement in an examination is being depend on his/her cumulative grade point average. The only measure of academic achievement of school leavers is the attainment of senior secondary school examination.

However reports of the past two year about the standard of academic achievement in the secondary school level have shown very poor due to the fact that a lot of factors that influence student achievement have not been address properly in the educational system. The following are some of the factors, namely, student individual difference, parent academic socialization, students first few years of life, environmental factors, poor classroom conditions, curriculum inadequacies, peer group influence, Jack of home support, teaching methods, lack of instructional material, poor reading habit. These reasons mighty perhaps have led to the remarks made by OECD (2010) that many young people do not learn much in developing countries.

The responsibility of training a child always lies in the hand of their parents. One of the major roles of the family is the education of students in order to make them useful members in the society in the present and later age, and as such education starts with the parents especially the mother who is expected to inculcate the basic ethics of living into the child. It is generally believed that education can be an instrument of a cultural change which is being taught from home is relevant in this discuss. It is not out of place to imagine that parental socio economic background can have possible effects on the academic achievement of students in school. Whatsoever affect that developmental environment of students would possibly affect their education.

According to Rothesteir 2003 has asserted as follows: ‘parents of different occupational classes often have different styles of child rearing, different ways of disciplining their students and different ways of reacting to their students. These differences do not express themselves consistently expected in the case of every family; rather they influence the average tendencies of families for different occupational classes.

In line with above assertion, hill how many of them? had also regard that social status of parents do not only affect the academic achievements, but also makes possible for students from low background to compete well with their counterparts from high social background under same academic environment. Smith, Faga and Wvund (2002) had asserted that significant predictor of intellectual achievement at age of 8 years included parental social status.

In the same vein, other researchers had posited that parental social status could affect school students as to bring about flexibility to adjustment to the different school schedules (Guerin et al, 2001). In a previous local finding in Nigeria, Oni (2002) and Omoegun (2007) had averred that there is significant difference between the rates of deviant, behavior among students from high and low social status.

The health status of the students which could also be traceable to parental social background can be another factor that c affect the academic achievement of the students. Adeivale (2002) bad reported that in rural community where nutritional status is relatively [ow and health problems are prevalent, students academic achievements 5 greatly hindered. This assertion is again hinged nature of parental social background. Moreover, Eze (1996) had opinion that the ability to interact with optimal advantage of the full complement of resources offered by any formal learning environment is enhanced.

The foregoing discussion had established that Social stats and host of other factors relating to home environment of students, such as educational background of parents, health status of students, parental occupation and family size could have effect on students academic achievement.

It is again this background that this work is being undertaken to empirically investigate the possible effect of these factors on student’s academic achievement in selected schools in the state. This study is aimed at investigating the possibility of parental social background playing a significant role on student’s academic achievement taking some selected secondary schools in Ewu Community in Ughelli South  Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria.
